Sent in an old backpack I bought in 1998-1999 school year that had started falling apart and received this one. Works great as a personal item for travel with lots of storage. Only complaint is the organizer pocket is sometimes hard to access stuff at the bottom because it's so deep and the zippers don't open all the way.

I use this backpack everyday for school. I haven't used it fr traveling yet, but I'm sure it will be great. It holds 3 notebooks and 2 binders. I got this after using a one pocket normal jansport bag and it has been lovely so far.

      Comments about JanSport ODYSSEY BACKPACK:

I have owned a Jansport Odyssey 38 for eight years. I used it in grad school, for travel, and overnight trip. It was a great bag that could do almost anything, but it was starting to get worn and I wanted to replace it.

I tried the new Odyssey. Unfortunately, it is definitely a step down from the original and even from the Air Odyssey packs that were produced by the company until this newest model was created. Those models were updated, but the pack was still essentially the same. This one is very different.

First of all, there is the problem of the padding on the shoulders. The 38 had Airlift pads with a gelastic gellycomb elastomer inside the straps. It distributed the load well and made it feel a lot lighter. The new straps are made out of foam and covered with mesh. They are extremely uncomfortable on my shoulders when I have a heavy load in there.

Another problem that I have is with the way that the pockets are distributed. In the past, the v-loft at the very back of the bag could be opened and there was a large pocket that could fit a laptop or a hydration bag. The v-loft is still, but that pocket is gone. Personally, I would like to have my laptop separated from my books and not sharing a compartment with them.

There was an organization compartment between the second main compartment and the stash pockets on the outer part of the bag. That is has been integrated into the first stash compartment, bu the interior has been rearranged. The two mesh pockets opposite the slots for pens are no longer there, but there is one above the slots and the space has been taken up with a tablet pocket where the mesh pockets used to be.

The material on this pack is much lighter than what it was on the 38. The fabric is almost see through and that makes me wonder about durability. My 38 has lasted some eight years, but the new one? Only time will tell, but I doubt it will be nearly as long.

The original Odyssey was designed as an all day pack that could be carried by someone to class, school, work, or on the trail. It had padding and straps that supported the heaviest loads. The new redesigned Odyssey is more of a student and travel pack than an outdoor one. It will probably work really well for someone people who don't mind pain in their shoulders or storing their laptop next to their books. As for me, I'll stick with my trusty 38.

          Comments about JanSport ODYSSEY BACKPACK:

I got this one in 2013 to replace other JanSport book bags while while they were being repaired. I have the older dark blue with grey trim.

I am very pleased with the bag. It holds allot of the lighter school supplies and my tablet including my Avengers pencil case. One would say that it takes a very special bag to carry the Avengers pencil case and JanSport is it. (LOL) I keep the heavy stuff like laptop and books in my JanSport driver 8. After over a year of use and with all the movement at college, it only has some minor dirt because of rain but it has stayed looking almost new.

I think that JanSport really knew what they were doing with this bag.

            Comments about JanSport ODYSSEY BACKPACK:

I sent my old 38 in a few weeks ago to get it repaired or replaced, they replaced it with the 39. Sadly, I am a little disappointed with it. I loved my 38, the only downfall was that it was a little heavy by itself (for me, not much of a problem. Plus, the weight came from extra reinforcements, making the pack much stronger and more durable).
The 39 however, doesn't have note card pockets or two separate places for a water bladder and a laptop, and the pocket it does have for them is inside another pocket with very little insulation or padding (if you get a hole in your water bladder, everything in the pack is ruined, and it doesn't keep your water cold). Also, the entire pack looks and feels flimsy compared to the 38 (I destroyed the 38 beyond repair in less than 6 years, how long will this last?).
I hope that the new one will grow on me a little more, but I am certain that it is not an equivalent replacement to the 38.

              Comments about JanSport ODYSSEY BACKPACK:

I just received my pack. I like it, even though it was not the pack I was expecting. I believe I have the newer model, I was unaware the Odyssey had been updated. It fits all my everyday carry stuff and then a LOT more room.

For this review, when I refer to my model, I'm referring to the updated version that I received. I read and watched reviews, which is what I'm basing this off of.

              Differences that I've noticed:
-The older model had a place for the hydration bladder AND a laptop. My model does not. The pouch the hydration bladder used to be is now a felt lined approximately 3" by 8" pocket.
-The organization pocket has been rearranged. Not for the worse, there is a sleeve that's a perfect size for a tablet. The clip was replaced with a very small carabiner.
-The breathable plastic has been replaced with foam. Its very comfortable and seems to breath really well. (See below)
-In reviews, people complained about the grab handle, saying its flimsy. It works, I don't personally have a problem with it.

              Con's:
-This is the only con (other than expecting the above listed differences, which isn't really a bad thing) is the mesh pockets on the side. They don't fit my nalgene very well at all. It fits with some pushing, but it takes actual effort to shove it in. I was worried that it would fall out, so I made for the take up strap goes through the nalgene's loop, which works for me.

              Pro's:
-ITS HUGE!!!!!!!! Legit, when I explored it this morning I was expecting The Doctor to come out.
-Without being broke in, its comfortable. (updated; still comfortable!)
-Feel's durable. I've had multiple Jansport bags in the past, so I know the quality is there.

I'll update this review in the next few weeks. My family and I are going on vacation (which is the reason I purchased this, to swap out for my old pack)

              Post vacation update:
Two flights, over night in a hotel, a shuttle, 5 day cruise with two ports of call, shuttle back to the air port and two more flights home. I still love this pack, but I found some minor annoyances, and some good key points. I managed to fit two days of cloths for myself, my 2 year old and my wife in the pack on the way down, plus some stuff personal stuff for the planes and airport. Carrying this was super comfortable. I noticed it isn't as breathable as I was led to believe, but It never bothered me enough to complain, just wanted to make it a point to mention. The waist belt (got a load of grief from my wife for looking like a dork) was uber comfortable and distributed the weight nicely. The straps and back foam were also comfortable (mind you I never used the stuff in the older packs to be able to compare). With the amount of stuff we had packed, it did make the pack quite large and difficult to stow in the plane's overhead bin or under the seat. Once we were on the ship I removed the majority of what we had packed for travel and it became our day bag around the ship, and into the ports of call we made. So in light of vacation, ample room for what I needed it for. Oh, the 3x8 pocket I mentioned above, I used more than I thought I would. I would have liked to see that and the hydration portion.

A few annoyances: The chest strap, the clips and the organizing pocket.
The chest strap itself I like, I wish there was a place to stow it when not in use. When I have the pack at work, the chest strap just hangs; Which leads to the next annoyance, the clips. The clips feel kinds cheap, and I know they don't stand accidentally being stepped on. My pack was sitting on the ground, I accidentally stepped on one of the chest strap clips and it shattered into 5 or 6 pieces. HOWEVER, I emailed Jansport's warranty and the replacement clip is on the way (sending the pack in would have had a month turn around time, I can put a clip on easily enough). The organizer, the pen holder straps could be smaller to better secure a pen. There are two little felt lined pouches, which could be either a little bigger or deeper for more utilization. I also wish there were more zippered pouches (like in the older packs).

Still love it, and I would still recommend it. I work two jobs in public safety (Career Firefighter and EMT), going back and forth from job to job I have room for all the stuff I carry (extra uniform, spare cloths, toiletries), PLUS stuff for my toddler and my every day stuff like my book, snacks, stuff.

I have had my odyssey 38 since the 7th grade (6 years) and it is just now wearing out. It has been on every camp out, hiking trip, vacation, and school day (and it's been washed once or twice) with me in the time that I've had it and the only things wrong with it are two rips and a broken zipper. I am not sure about the odyssey 39, but I am considering replacing my 38 with it.

The straps are horrible, no padding.
I mean compared to previous Jansports, this ranks about a 1/10; yes, it's that bad.
