Not what I was expecting.

By Aspen

from Hartford, CT

Pros

  • A lot of pockets
  • Good amount of space
  • Nice colors
  • Padded Shoulder Straps

Cons

  • Too many straps

Best Uses

  • School

Comments about JanSport HATCHET:

I was getting this bag to use for school for the upcoming year and I was pretty disappointed with it. I don't know why, but I was really overwhelmed by the number of straps that, unless used for hiking or something else other than school, seemed really unecessary. I guess for some it might be a desired look, but I just wasn't impressed.
Other than that, it seemed to fit everything pretty well and there were a lot of pockets, which was a plus for me.
Unfortunately, I had to return it because it just wasn't the right style, but if you like the straps, its the perfect bag for you.

How is This Backpack Small?

By RYMO

from Walnut Creek, CA

Pros

  • Lots of pockets
  • Nice design

Cons

  • Somehow Unusually Small

Best Uses

  • Not Much If It's So Small

Comments about JanSport HATCHET:

I bought this backpack thinking it would be perfect, spacious, and roomy, but when I began to pack in my supplies in, I quickly ran out of room. After fitting in one 13.7" laptop and two binders, I couldn't fit in any more stuff in it! It was so teeny that I was fortunate even to be able to fit in an extra book. Maybe something went wrong during manufacturing? Or is it just my lack of experience in backpacks?

Either way, I must have just gotten unlucky. So sad; it had so much potential.

Solid pack overall

Comments about JanSport HATCHET:

I bought this bag looking for a slightly larger and sturdier pack after my classic Superbreak saw me through a few solid years but grew too small for my hefty 15" Macbook and my daily walks to and from work.

My 15" laptop fits perfectly in the sleeve and stays close to the back, so I can't complain about how it feels. Even though it's a substantially heavier backpack, it's much more comfortable due to padding and the distribution setup of the main compartment.

I have to agree with other reviewers that it's hard to get into the main compartment on the go (i.e., while walking or standing), which was no problem for the Superbreak. It's not the worst thing, but for my next bag I will be searching for easier on-the-go access.

Overall, great backpack

By Student

from North Carolina

Pros

  • Extra roomy
  • Nice Look
  • Pockets

Cons

  • Side pockets too small

Best Uses

  • School

Comments about JanSport HATCHET:

I use this backpack for school, and it carries all of my books and binders without looking too bulky. I like to carry my water bottle, but the pockets are much too small for any water bottle I've ever seen. Other than that, there seems to be a perfect place for practically anything!

Awesome! Main Zipper Pocket Can Be Inconvenient Though :/

By Abbie

Pros

  • A lot of pockets
  • BEAUTIFUL
  • Enough room
  • Makes you look cool
  • Side Zipper Pocket

Cons

  • Main Pocket's Zipper

Best Uses

  • Adding Patches Pins
  • For school
  • Looking Totally Awesome

Comments about JanSport HATCHET:

I bought this backpack for back to school, and I'm seriously loving it! It's beautiful (I bought the Bozeman Brown version) and it has all the pockets I could ever want/need. My FAVORITE zipper pocket is the one on the side. It's super convenient for sticking my phone in.

My only problem with this backpack is that it's kind of awkward/hard to unzip the main pocket. The zippers tend to get stuck at the very top, making it hard to zip and unzip quickly. Honestly, though, that isn't much of a problem for me. It's very rare that I need to zip it up quickly, and I'm a pretty patient person so it's no biggie for me.

Overall, this is a really nice backpack. I'd recommend it to any students. It's really fun to cover in pins & patches, and it's also really fun walking down the hallway knowing you have the coolest backpack.

Comments about JanSport HATCHET:

Everything is what I expected and its quite a functional bag, but however I ordered midnight blue sky and the color scheme I thought I ordered is different. The top of the bag is a different color than the bottom which is clearly different from the picture because instead of a dark navy blue backpack , the top is blue which stands out, but other than I love it, Still debating if I want to return it or not

        Comments about JanSport HATCHET:

Lemme just start this off by saying that I was debating over several Jansport backpacks, this one included, along with the Envoy and the Locklyn. I love the design of all three but came to a decision with this one, the Hatchet. And I do not regret my decision at all. It arrived exactly 28 hours after I ordered it! And when it arrived, I was in love with it immediately. I looked through all pockets and checked all zippers and they all worked. It has a good amount of pockets, not too much but also not too little, it was exactly what I wanted. I had a pocket for each specific thing. I am going to be carrying this backpack with me around campus and I am confident that it will last a very long time. Also lemme just say that the main pocket may not seem a bit roomy but if you loosen the straps (on the side, that makes the backpack look slimmer) it can get pretty roomy. There are many storage compartments in the main pocket for your laptop/tablet/keys/phone/pen/pencil and also a hole for your earphones or hydration hose. One last thing, I am a very short girl (5'0) and I thought I'd look like I'd be drowning in this backpack but it actually doesn't look too bad! It covers my entire back and I don't mind at all. So good luck with figuring out which one of these magnificent backpacks you want and you will be happy with whichever one you choose!

        Solid Laptop backpack

        By Ming the Merciless

        from Toronto, ON

        Pros

        • Keeps Everything Compact
        • Laptop And Tablet Sleeves
        • Lots Of Random Pockets
        • Main Pocket Opens Ideally
        • Organizer Panel Is Useful
        • Slot For Hydration Hose

        Cons

        • Main Pocket Limited Size
        • Not The Heaviest Material
        • Not waterproof
        • Padding Minimal

        Best Uses

          Comments about JanSport HATCHET:

I love this pack. My 15" Vaio and Surface fit in their own respective slots. The organizer is great for all the odds and ends you'll need, like pens, calculator, notepads, etc. Even has a small carabiner inside. The various zipper pockets aren't huge, but offer plenty of storage for your odds and ends. There is a larger front pocket for your charger and mouse. The standard water bottle pockets are there, of course.

The straps and back are minimally padded, but, to be honest, this isn't an issue. In fact, I would argue that it may be positive as it keeps the bulk down. Certainly, the bag is plenty comfy as it is. The compact nature of this bag design also does an excellent job of keep everything close to your back, which adds more comfort to overall wearability, function, and balance.

The only real complaints I have about this bag few. The biggest complaint is the storage capacity of the main chamber. A few books fit just fine, and, in fact, the chambers shape keeps everything sitting nicely upright and not falling over to the bottom of the pack where they get dog-eared and mangled. Anything beyond this, though, like a couple of books plus a binder, or a coat, and you will find yourself stretched for space. I might have liked a bit more room. The positive spin to this, however, is that you can never overload it with too much stuff so that you are killing your back and what not.

Other complaints include the pack not being waterproof (but it's also well under $100), and the fact that the material, while seemingly durable, is a bit thin. Not paper thin, but certainly not as heavy as many other bags I've had over the years.
