A Back-to-School College Packing List
Need to get ready for your college year? It can be daunting to figure out what you need to take with you, especially if you are a freshman. Fortunately, our college packing list will get you ready for this exciting first day of school. So simply keep this list handy, and you’ll be in good shape.
Bedding
If you're going to be living in a college dorm, you'll need to shop for a Twin XL bed. Here's what you need to bring:
-
Comforter
-
Top and fitted sheet in Twin XL size, along with pillowcases
-
Pillows
-
Blankets
-
Foam mattress topper (optional)
-
Clippable reading lamp (optional)
Here’s a tip: Consider bringing two sets of bed linens in case of spills and laundry mishaps.
Some schools do supply sheets for dorm beds, so if that's the case, skip that purchase.
Study Equipment
You might forget sometimes, but the point of college is actually going to class. So put these school items on your college packing list:
-
Laptop: If you don’t have one, they’re pretty essential for working anywhere, even for taking notes in class. Choose from our selection of laptop sleeve backpacks to store your device on the go.
-
Electronic tablet: Many students appreciate how easy they are to use. They’re also great for reading.
-
Notebooks, pens, pencils, and markers: Writing the old-fashioned way helps you learn.
-
Charging cables for laptop, tablet, and phone: These can get lost easily, so get some backups! Make sure you grab a pouch to easily find these in your bags.
-
Reading lamp: This can make it easier to read at your dorm desk.
The best college packing list item for studying, however, is the one that ties it all together—your college backpack. You need to go to a lot of places each day–from your dorm room to the classroom to the dining hall to the library to the gym to time with your friends. So your backpack needs to have your back all day long. Browse our large backpacks collection to make sure you’ve got all the space you need.
Shower Equipment and Toiletries
A packing list for guys might have a shorter list when it comes to this section. But some dudes take self-care seriously, and we applaud them.
Here are some essentials for good hygiene:
-
Toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss
-
Deodorant
-
Bar soap or body wash
-
Shampoo/conditioner
-
Towels
-
Moisturizer/skin lotion
-
Appropriate shoes (slides/sandals) for the hallway journey
-
A shower tote to carry shower supplies to and from shower areas
Some “Wait and See” Items
There’s no use buying and hauling certain things to school until you’re sure that they’re necessities. Someone else’s “ultimate college packing list” might have an impressive list of items. But you’ll learn a lot about what’s really important in your first semester.
To reduce waste and spending, maybe hold off on items like:
-
Printer: Campus printing gets a bad rap, but it’s affordable and usually convenient. Probably more convenient than buying paper and ink.
-
Mini-fridge: Communal fridges might be available in your dorm. Plus, what if your roommate brings one, too?
-
Microwave: These should be readily available in any dorm space.
-
Cooking equipment: Unless you’re already in a suite, it’s hard to know what your shared dorm kitchen will already be stocked with.
-
Television: You want to binge-watch on your laptop, phone, or tablet instead.
