Big City Mountaineers

Big City Mountaineers

For the last 30 years, Big City Mountaineers has been breaking down barriers to outdoor access for youth from disinvested communities. Their programs - overnight camps for youth ages 8-12, and week-long backpacking or canoeing expeditions for youth ages 13-18 - are fully outfitted, professionally led, and totally free for the youth who participate. By giving youth responsibilities like navigation, cooking, and water purification, and pairing them with supportive volunteer mentors and a professional guide, their programs support group communication, teamwork, self-confidence, and a love of the natural world. They engage nearly 1,000 youth annually in Boston, Denver, Miami, Minneapolis, Portland, San Francisco, and Seattle. JanSport is proud to support Big City Mountaineers through program funding, donations of technical packs, and gift of yearly shirts and Summit Flags for youth programs and Summit for Someone fundraiser climbs.
